What are skid plates? These aftermarket ATV, UTV and motorcycle accessories are designed to combat rocks and fallen timber and protect the important parts of the undercarriage such as, the casing to the motor and transmission, water pump, drive train and swing arm. Some front bumpers for ATV’s and side x sides also have a skid plate built in protecting the chassis upon impact with large rocks. There’s also a skid plate to protect the a-arms of your four-wheeler or UTV, but these are referred to as a-arm guards.
Aftermarket skid plates for an ATV, UTV or dirt bike are typically made from 6061 T-6 aluminum. If the machine came stock with skid plates these are usually made of cheap plastic. Although recent designs for motocross skid plates use a high density impact resistant polyethylene (a plastic) or carbon fiber which is flexible to reduce breakage, much lighter then aluminum and quieter.
