This is a remote area that consists mainly of gravel roads and jeep trails, with some sections being very rocky. A nice staging/camping area next to a stream is on the left near the main entrance at N42.01.615 W 123.46.079. If you stage here, follow the main road up the mountain, past the gravel pit, and bear right at the fork (go through the yellow gate) and look for a large unmarked open area on the right which is the actual trailhead. While in the area, check out the Oregon Caves National Monument (north on 199), the Smith River Nation Recreation Area, or the nearby redwood forest (10-15 miles south on 199).
