Ranger’s, RZR’s, Rhino’s, Commander’s, Prowler’s, Gator’s and the Teryx are all great UTV models to put to work in the winter because they can be outfitted with accessories to make them very comfortable to operate in the cold even with the snow flying.
In this section you’ll see what you need to make your side x side the perfect workhorse this winter and what options in accessories are available.
UTV Winterizing Keep Warm Accessories List
Cab Enclosure
The first step is to seal up the cockpit with a cab enclosure. These are available in soft, steel or plastic models. For more info on cab enclosures see our cab enclosure page here.
Doors
In the scenario you already have a top, front and rear window installed, you would just need a set of full doors or half doors with the option to add the upper half to completely enclose the cab. At this stage take into consideration if you’d also like to be able use these doors in the summer. Some door options are fabric and are not designed for regular trail use. Doors come in soft, steel and plastic models.
Floor Panels & Mats
To seal up the floor of the cabin install a pair of floor mats or panels. These are available in rubber and diamond plate.
Heater
There are a two options here, 12V heaters and models that hook up to the cooling system. For the best results in cold climates use the heavy duty heaters that hook up to the cooling system. There are brands that make units specifically for each UTV model, including mounting brackets and all the hardware. These setups can range from $400-$700. Here is a universal heater that will get the job done for a lot less.
This UTV heater is a very popular option among RZR forum members, so we know it works and they have great results with it. It’s a fraction of the price and has more heating power.

Snow Plow
Not only is having a plow for your UTV a great idea to keep your driveway clear, but it’s also a great way to earn extra cash to support your off-road hobby. With the right setup you can take advantage of being able to offer snow plowing services to your neighbors. After one or two winters your plow will pay for itself. For UTV’s use a blade size anywhere between 60-72 inch, your decision will mainly depend upon your budget since 72in. plows can run pretty expensive. Winch
When operating a side x side in the snow it’s inevitable you’re going to get stuck and it’s a good idea to have a backup plan. If you plan on getting a plow, chances are your going to need a winch to operate the plow anyhow. UTV’s are heavy and require a winch with at least a 3,500lb rating. If your budget allows for it, it would be a good choice to step up to a 4,500lb winch, especially if the UTV is equipped with lots of additional heavy accessories. For more info and reviews on winches go here.
Tires
If your tires are bad not even four wheel drive will save you. Make sure you got a good set of rubber installed when the snow comes. Check out ITP’s Tundra Tire.
Tracks
For the ultimate winter UTV accessory check out a set of tracks. Find more information on track systems here.
Lighting
Another thing that sucks about winter is that it gets dark earlier in the day. If you’re not happy with the amount of light your OEM lights put out then now is the time to fix it. With better lighting you can get more work done faster and most importantly…safer. It’s not only safer for the operator, but it keeps the driver from putting the machine in a situation that can cause damage…also known as a fender bender or an oopps! The best option is low voltage drawing LED lights. Read more info on LED lighting for side x sides here.
Synthetic Oil
Running through deep snow and plowing can really put a motor through the paces. Most of the time the engine is running at higher RPM’s because you’re trying to make it through the snow and the tires are spinning faster then they would if you were on dry ground. Make sure to keep the motor fully protected with a fully synthetic oil that has a high viscosity rating. Fully synthetic oil will provide the best protection from a cold start to when the engine is at its hottest. For more info on motor oil go here.
