If you’re looking for a way to add more versatility to your ATV definitely consider installing an aftermarket rack or rack accessory like drop baskets and rack extenders. ATV racks and baskets come in many styles and brands and there are a few things you need to consider before you purchase. One of the major factors to consider when looking at a new rack is, what are you going to use it for? Some racks fold down flat to extend the hauling capacity, others like the “drop baskets” allow you to carry 5 gal. buckets more securely. Take your time and browse through all the models that are available and look for the one you can see yourself getting the most use out of. Also consider if the design or brand you’re interested in offers upgradable mount accessories. Upgrades like chainsaw mounts, bow & gun racks, gas can brackets or even a shovel holder. You’ll be surprised at what some of these manufactures have thought of.
The way the rack is constructed may be a factor in the way you intend to use the rack. Some models use expanded metal while others use laser cut designs. In this case, if rope is being used often to secure loads the laser cut design may propose challenges in finding easy ways to tie down loads. Also, the sharp edges from laser cut sheet metal can fray the rope and cause the load to become unsecured. But if you just need a place to hook a bungee cord a laser cut rack would be fine.
Manufactures use 12 & 14 gauge steel and 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch steel tubing for their racks so durability is not a worry. Economy designs offer a regular paint finish while premier models will be coated in a durable powder coat finish.
Sport ATV’s also have the ability to install racks thanks to brands like Fuse Powersports. Fortunately they have taken the time to design stylish racks to accommodate sport ATV trail riders.
