8 Ply ATV Tires are becoming a staple in the industry with tire manufactures introducing more models every year. With the innovation of radial designed ATV tires, 8ply tires were able to be produced that could still offer a smooth ride.
These thicker tires are best for rocky terrain and the 8 ply casing works great against punctures from sharp rocks and impacts that lead to the tire being pinched between the rim and the rock. For muddy conditions we suggest 6ply mud tires.
If you describe yourself as an average trail rider, 8ply tires would most likely be over kill and not worth the extra investment. On the other hand, if you seem to always be getting a flat tire, an 8 ply tire would be a great way to combat that problem from happening as often.
One of the major arguments against 8 ply tires is the additional weight. On average an 8 ply tire weighs about 5-6 lbs more per tire then a 6 ply tire. The only time I would start scrutinizing an extra 20-24 lbs. is if my quad was already loaded down with a bunch of accessories and equipment and I thought the added weight of the new tires would tip the scale to where I would definitely notice a downgrade in performance. In most cases these tires are going on 4×4 quads and UTV’s with 650-1000cc’s and that extra 20 lbs. is nothing.
